Happy Wednesday of Public Schools Week!
We are halfway through a week dedicated to celebrating the cornerstone of our communities: our public education system. Our feeds are filled with incredible stories of student achievement, resilient educators, and innovative programs happening right here in our local districts.
It is right to celebrate these wins. In fact, it’s essential. The narrative around public education is often dominated by challenges—budget constraints, safety concerns, and staffing shortages. We must aggressively elevate the stories of the daily miracles happening inside our school walls.
But celebration is not enough.
If the first half of this week is about recognition, let’s make the second half about connection.
At Relatrix, we work with districts across the country, and we see a universal truth: Schools cannot thrive in isolation. The challenges facing modern K12 education are too complex for educators to shoulder alone. They were never meant to.
The “Community Wrap-Around”
Public schools are strongest when they are the hub of a vibrant ecosystem involving families, local businesses, nonprofits, and civic leaders. When these groups are kept at arm’s length—receiving only the occasional newsletter or fundraising plea—the school suffers.
But when they are brought close, magic happens:
Families become partners in learning, understanding not just what their child is studying, but how to support that journey at home.
Local businesses become workforce pipelines, providing mentorships and real-world context to curriculum.
Community leaders become advocates, understanding the nuance of school funding and championing necessary bonds and levies.
Moving from Transactional to Transformational
Too often, “community engagement” is viewed as a transaction: a notification sent, a survey completed, a ticket bought.
To truly elevate the great work going on in our public schools, we need to shift toward transformational engagement. This means creating two-way channels of communication built on trust, transparency, and consistency. It means inviting the community in not just when there is a crisis or a financial need, but to share in the daily joys and the strategic vision of the district.
A Call to Action for the Rest of the Week
As we finish out Public Schools Week 2026, let’s commit to closing the gap between “school” and “community.”
If you are a school leader, take one step this week to invite a new partner to the table. If you are a community member, reach out and ask how your unique skills can support your local school’s mission.
Public schools are the bedrock of our future. Let’s make sure they have the foundation of a supportive, engaged community beneath them.
